A forklift that stops in the middle of a dispatch costs far more than its repair bill — trucks wait, labour stands idle and orders slip. An annual maintenance contract (AMC) is how most factories and warehouses keep that from happening.

The short answer

A forklift AMC is a yearly contract in which a service company maintains your forklift on a fixed schedule for a fixed fee, and gives you priority breakdown support. It is worth it if the machine works every day, if you have more than one forklift, or if you have no in-house technician. A comprehensive AMC also covers most parts; a non-comprehensive AMC covers labour and checks, and parts are charged separately.

What a forklift AMC usually covers

IncludedWhat it means in practice
Preventive maintenance visitsScheduled checks — often monthly or by running hours
Engine or motor servicingOil, filters and tune-up for diesel; motor and controller checks for electric
HydraulicsHoses, cylinders, seals, oil level and leaks
Mast, chains and forksWear, stretch, lubrication and fork-tip checks
Brakes and steeringAdjustment and safety test
Battery care (electric)Water level, specific gravity, terminals and charger
Priority breakdown responseA technician sent ahead of non-AMC calls
Service reportA written record after every visit — useful for audits

Comprehensive vs non-comprehensive AMC

Always ask for the exclusion list in writing. Tyres, forks, batteries and accident damage are the items most often left out.

Is a forklift AMC worth it?

An AMC usually pays for itself when:

  • The forklift runs every day or more than one shift
  • You have two or more machines, so one service contract replaces many small bills
  • The machine is out of manufacturer warranty
  • You face factory, fire or client safety audits that ask for service records
  • You have no in-house mechanic who knows forklifts

It may not be worth it for a machine that is used a few hours a month — pay-per-visit servicing can be cheaper there.

What decides the AMC price?

There is no single price list, because the risk for the service company changes with every machine. The fee depends on:

  1. Machine type — diesel, battery, reach truck or stacker
  2. Capacity and brand — larger and imported machines cost more to maintain
  3. Age and running hours — older machines need more parts and visits
  4. Usage — single shift vs round-the-clock
  5. Comprehensive or non-comprehensive
  6. Number of machines and location — fleets and nearby sites cost less per machine

Signs your forklift needs a maintenance plan now

  • Hydraulic oil leaks or the mast drifting down under load
  • Jerky lifting or slow hydraulics
  • Black smoke, hard starting or overheating (diesel)
  • Battery not lasting a full shift (electric)
  • Brakes or steering feeling loose
  • Chains looking stretched or dry

If you see any of these, get the machine inspected before it fails during a busy shift. Our daily forklift safety checklist helps operators catch problems early.

Questions to ask before you sign a forklift AMC

  1. How many preventive visits per year, and who decides the schedule?
  2. What is the breakdown response time for my location?
  3. Which parts are included, and which are excluded?
  4. Is a standby machine available if mine is down for days?
  5. Will I get a written report after every visit?
  6. Does it cover all my brands, or only one?

Frequently asked questions

What is a forklift AMC?

A forklift AMC (annual maintenance contract) is a one-year agreement where a service provider performs scheduled maintenance on your forklift and gives priority breakdown support for a fixed fee.

What is the difference between comprehensive and non-comprehensive forklift AMC?

A comprehensive AMC includes labour and most spare parts. A non-comprehensive AMC includes labour, visits and checks, while spare parts are billed separately.

How often should a forklift be serviced?

Most forklifts need preventive maintenance every month or every few hundred running hours, plus a daily pre-shift check by the operator. Heavy or multi-shift use needs more frequent service.

Do you provide AMC for all forklift brands?

Yes. Gourav Lifters services forklifts, reach trucks and pallet trucks of all major brands, whoever you bought them from.

Does an AMC cover forklift batteries?

Battery care — watering, cleaning, terminal and charger checks — is usually covered. Replacing a worn-out battery is normally excluded or charged separately, so check the contract.
