Battery (electric) and diesel forklifts lift the same pallets, but they suit very different sites. Pick the wrong one and you either fill a closed warehouse with exhaust fumes or watch an electric machine struggle on a muddy yard.
The short answer
- Rent a battery forklift if you work indoors, on smooth concrete floors, in food, pharma, FMCG, textiles or cold storage, and run one or two shifts a day.
- Rent a diesel forklift if you work outdoors, on rough or sloped ground, load trucks and containers in a yard, handle loads above about 5 tons, or run the machine round the clock.
- Not sure? If more than half of the work happens under a roof on a good floor, battery is usually the better choice.
Battery vs diesel forklift: side-by-side
| Battery (electric) forklift | Diesel forklift | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Indoor warehouses, factories, cold rooms | Outdoor yards, loading bays, construction and steel |
| Exhaust emissions | None at the machine | Yes — needs open or well-ventilated areas |
| Noise | Very quiet | Loud |
| Floor needed | Smooth, level concrete | Handles uneven, broken or sloped ground |
| Common rental capacities | 1.5 – 5 ton | 2.5 – 10 ton and above |
| Refuelling / charging | Overnight or between-shift charging | Refuel in a few minutes |
| Running cost per hour | Usually lower (electricity) | Usually higher (diesel) |
| Maintenance | Fewer moving parts, battery care needed | Engine oil, filters and servicing |
| Round-the-clock use | Needs a spare battery or fast charging | Easy — just refuel |
When a battery forklift is the right choice
Electric forklifts produce no exhaust at the machine and run quietly, so they are the default for any closed building. Food, pharmaceutical and FMCG units often insist on them because diesel fumes and soot are not acceptable near products. They are also smoother to drive in tight aisles and cost less per hour to run.
The trade-off is charging. A standard lead-acid traction battery usually gives one working shift per charge and then needs several hours on the charger, plus a cool-down period. For two shifts you either schedule charging in the gap or keep a spare battery. You also need a suitable power point near where the machine will be parked overnight.
Check before you rent:
- Is there a single-phase or three-phase power point for the charger? Tell us which one you have.
- Is the floor smooth? Small solid tyres on electric machines do not like potholes, gravel or expansion joints with big gaps.
- How many hours a day will the machine actually lift? This decides whether one battery is enough.
When a diesel forklift is the right choice
Diesel forklifts are the workhorses of outdoor yards. Bigger pneumatic or solid tyres, more ground clearance and a strong engine let them cross broken concrete, gravel and slopes while carrying heavy loads. They refuel in minutes, so a single machine can run two or three shifts without waiting for a charge.
They are the usual choice for steel and pipe yards, marble and granite units, building material depots, container stuffing and de-stuffing, and any site where loads are heavier than about 5 tons. Because they produce exhaust, they should only be used inside a building if it is large and well ventilated.
Check before you rent:
- Will the machine be used inside a closed shed at any point? If yes, plan ventilation or consider electric.
- What is the heaviest load, and how far is its centre of gravity from the fork face? Long loads like pipes and slabs need extra capacity.
- Who will arrange diesel on site? Fuel is normally the hirer's responsibility on rented machines.
Running cost: what actually changes
The rent itself is only part of the cost. Over a monthly hire, think about:
- Energy: electricity for charging is usually cheaper than the diesel a machine burns in the same hours.
- Downtime: a battery that runs flat mid-shift stops work; a diesel can be topped up quickly.
- Operator time: both need a trained operator — you can hire one with the machine.
- Site rules: some customers and auditors do not allow diesel equipment inside production areas at all.
For what decides the rent itself, see our forklift rental price guide.
Can I switch later?
Yes. One advantage of renting over buying is that you are not locked in. Many customers start with a diesel machine for a yard project and switch to an electric forklift once the work moves indoors. Tell us when your work changes and we will plan the swap.
Frequently asked questions
Is a battery forklift cheaper to rent than a diesel forklift?
Not always. Rent depends on capacity, brand, age and rental period more than on fuel type. Battery forklifts usually cost less to run per hour because electricity is cheaper than diesel, so the total monthly cost is often lower for indoor work.
How long does a forklift battery last on one charge?
A standard lead-acid traction battery usually lasts about one working shift on a full charge, depending on load, lift height and driving distance. For two or three shifts, plan for a spare battery or charging breaks.
Can a diesel forklift be used inside a warehouse?
Only in large, well-ventilated buildings and for limited periods, because diesel engines produce exhaust fumes. For closed warehouses, food, pharma and cold storage, a battery forklift is the safer choice.
Which forklift is better for outdoor and rough ground?
A diesel forklift. Its larger tyres, higher ground clearance and engine power handle gravel, slopes and broken concrete far better than an electric machine.
Which forklift should I rent for a 5 ton load?
Both battery and diesel forklifts are available around 5 tons, but for outdoor work, long loads or heavier weights a diesel machine is the usual choice. Share the load weight, size and lift height and we will confirm the right capacity.
