There is no single right answer — it depends on how many hours a day the machine works, for how long you'll need it, and whether you have the people to maintain it.
Renting usually makes sense when…
- Your need is seasonal, project-based or uncertain
- You don't have an in-house mechanic for forklifts
- Downtime is costly and you want a replacement machine guaranteed
- You'd rather keep capital for your core business
- You want to try a machine type (e.g. a reach truck) before committing
Buying usually makes sense when…
- The machine will run most of the day, every day, for many years
- You have maintenance staff and a parts supply
- Your requirement is stable and won't change for years
Costs people forget when buying
- Routine servicing, filters and oils
- Tyres, batteries and hydraulic seals over the machine's life
- Breakdown repairs and the lost production while the machine is down
- Operator training and statutory inspections
- Resale value falling each year
The middle path
If you already own machines, an Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC) gives you rental-like peace of mind: scheduled service, priority breakdown response and discounted parts. And for peak seasons, you can rent extra machines on top of your own fleet.
Tip: Rental GST invoices let registered businesses claim input tax credit, and rent is generally treated as an operating expense. Check the specifics with your accountant.
